Listen to Parents: Tom’s Story

Listen to Parents is a series of testimonials from parents who have seen their children develop in leaps and bounds following Karen O’Connor’s Pieces of the Jigsaw© programme.

Tom discusses his daughter’s experience with Karen O’Connor and the differences he saw in the Pieces of the Jigsaw programme compared to ‘standard’ techniques they’d encountered.

Once Tom’s daughter was diagnosed with verbal dyspraxia she visited various speech therapists regarding her speech delay issues. As soon as Tom was in contact with Karen she made him feel confident that his daughter would achieve her true potential. That’s when they realised that it was more than just speech difficulties that it was many pieces of the jigsaw including sensory and motor issues which all needed to be addressed.

Karen’s approach looked at the whole picture of their child addressed through listening therapy and the brushing programme.

Tom’s daughter was afraid to touch certain objects and walk on sand for example but now after working with Karen O’ Connor, she has no issues at all.

At three and a half years, she started her therapeutic listening and at the time she struggled to say one or two words. Within three months she was able to sing Twinkle twinkle little star.  Karen was nearly able to predict how long her sentences would be in this timeframe and within two weeks she was using over 10 words in a sentence.

After the first LiFT programme, her motor skills i.e. skipping and hopping improved massively which brought on her speech and clarity.  Tom highly recommends Karen’s approach and programmes and believes his daughter would not be the child she is today without them.
